LESSON PLANS FOR INTERPRETIVE TOURS
WITH DISCUSSION TOPICS

The collections at the Museum of Appalachia offer countless opportunities to illustrate many of the concepts outlined in the TCAP Achievement State Performance Indicators in Social Studies and in Reading/Language Arts.   The following are suggestions for teaching these concepts during your visit to the Museum and in post-visit follow-up classes; in large part, they support a pedagogical framework that encourages development of conceptual thinking skills.

In some instances, we have included ancillary items for discussion that do not directly apply to the SPIs, but which do encourage idea-sharing and promote interest in the topic.

A bibliography for quoted texts appears at the end of the lesson plans.
